Community Art Project on Membership (SUBMISSIONS) by Megan Whyte

I am creating a sculpture based on membership and the idea of Native identity.
To create this project, I need the participation of the community, including children, youth, adults and elders.
I am looking to contrast and to an extent marry the idea of membership with the ideas of value, traditions and family ties. This project also doubles as a forum for those who do not like talking to discuss their opinion on membership and iden...tity. This is a powerful issue that will affect all of us for the next seven generations. Let's make sure everyone is heard.

I am looking for submissions (in a 8X11 FORMAT--computer paper size) from all members of community. Each submission will express your thoughts on native identity. You can either sign your name or write anonymous.

The project will be showcased at the Cultural Center from august 2011 to October 2011. Note: ALL SUBMISSIONS WILL BE USED AND EXHIBITED TO THE PUBLIC!

Possible questions to answer:
1. Describe native identity in three words. Why these words?
2. How do you think the community views native identity? Is there something you would like to change?
3. How do you relate to the term "native". What can this term look like?
4. Describe an experience you've had with the membership law. What could you do to prevent or ensure these experiences for others?
5. What would you like people on the outside to learn about native identity? How can we defeat our stereotypes?
6. What values do you think define native identity? Do you live them? What can you do to ensure you live them?

Possible submission formats:
1. letter (addressed to either myself, a family member, an ancestor, and outsider etc.)
2. A few words on paper.
3. A drawing or photograph of a drawing.
4. A painting or photograph of a painting.
4. A photograph (of places in the community, home, an event, family etc.)

The first deadline is March 25th and the Second deadline is July 1st.
