What do you want to say?

The Kahnawake Voices website is up and running. The past six-months have been spent drafting, consulting and editing to create a space where people can share their personal stories, thoughts and experiences on the evictions and the larger issues of membership and identity.

These issues are once again front and center as the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake prepares to use the Community Decision Making Process to review the Membership Law later this fall.

Kahnawake Voices is another platform to aid in this discussion and to offer insight on how to move forward as a community through a sharing of ideas and experiences.

Membership is a complex and loaded issue that affects all of us in some way or another. It can be mind boggling to decipher and that’s one of the reasons I started this project: to gain a better understanding of what this issue means to the individuals that make up the community.

Openness and a willingness to listen are important qualities to practice in this process. The site is moderated to ensure that the contributions are respectful, regardless of the viewpoint or stance.

Share your story and speak to your experience. If you have a question that’s been milling around your head, post it! And feel free to send anything else that you think is pertinent to the topic (articles, images, audio, etc.) and I will work on incorporating it into the project.

What’s decided in the coming months doesn’t directly affect me and maybe never will (children and marriage aren’t on my list of priorities) but I think it’s important to get involved and try to understand how our current decisions affect others as well as future generations.
