Elders' Lodge visit

I made my way to the Elders’ Lodge last week to speak with them about Kahnawake Voices.

Although it was a brief visit, the residents opened up about their travels (one of our first nurses worked at Kateri as well as in Montreal and Los Angeles). Two other women spoke about living in NYC for over 40 years. Others recalled working in their gardens, dancing at the old Indian Village for tourists and sewing clothes for the Inuit children that were sent to Kateri Hospital for medical care.

This outreach initiative is an on-going process. Over the next few months, I will continue to visit with the elders and listen to the stories that they wish to contribute and share through this project. This source of oral history should not be overlooked. These stories reveal much more about our culture, history and identity than any registry ever can.
